The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) renewed its call for equitable and transparent distribution of resources across Libya, emphasising its importance for all citizens.
The statement came following a meeting on Sunday between Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Resident Coordinator, and Humanitarian Coordinator for Libya, Aeneas Chuma, and German Ambassador Ralph Tarraf to discuss shared priorities.
The UN mission highlighted Libya’s urgent need for sustainable development funding, stating that transparent resource allocation is crucial for the well-being of all Libyan citizens. “An equitable and transparent distribution of resources is essential for everyone in Libya,” the UN mission said in its statement.
Previously, Acting UN Special Envoy Stephanie Khoury urged Libyan institutions to prioritise reaching a unified budget agreement that would ensure a fair, responsible, and transparent use of the country’s wealth.
She made these remarks in September during the signing ceremony of an agreement between the House of Representatives and the High Council of State concerning the Libyan Central Bank.
The UN’s consistent calls for fair resource allocation come amid Libya’s ongoing struggle with economic instability and political division, with rival factions controlling different regions.
The UN has stressed that a unified budget is critical to prevent further financial fragmentation and to ensure that Libya’s oil revenues benefit all Libyans, including future generations.
The meeting with the German Ambassador also underscored the role of international partners in supporting Libya’s path to sustainable development.
Both parties agreed on the importance of international cooperation in promoting financial transparency and creating inclusive economic opportunities in Libya.
