During a joint press conference, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune expressed mutual support for a Libyan-led solution to the ongoing crisis in Libya. El-Sisi highlighted that any resolution must respect Libya’s sovereignty, with no external interference.
Welcoming President Tebboune to the Ittihadiya Presidential Palace in Cairo, El-Sisi reiterated Egypt’s firm stance on Libya. He emphasised that Egypt supports the Libyan government responsible for steering the country towards elections, reinforcing the belief that only a Libyan-Libyan solution can bring sustainable peace.
“The path forward in Libya must be solely determined by Libyans, free from foreign intervention,” stated El-Sisi. He underscored that Egypt stands ready to support all legitimate efforts towards a stable and sovereign Libya.
Echoing El-Sisi’s sentiments, President Tebboune affirmed that Algeria shares a common stance with Egypt on Libya. He stressed that any intervention in Libya should come exclusively from Libyans themselves. According to Tebboune, the desired outcome is for Libya to hold elections, allowing the people to decide their own leadership.
“Only those elected by the Libyan people will have the legitimacy to manage Libya’s affairs,” Tebboune asserted. He also reiterated Algeria’s willingness to assist in any way to help Libya achieve these goals.
The two leaders emphasised the importance of regional stability, with El-Sisi and Tebboune agreeing to support Libyan efforts towards autonomy and national unity. The presidents also discussed the shared goal of aiding Libya’s electoral process to ensure a democratic and peaceful future for the country.
This joint stance between Egypt and Algeria highlights a regional commitment to maintaining Libya’s sovereignty and supporting its path to a self-determined future, with both nations pledging continued assistance towards these objectives.
