Libyan University Syndicate Calls for Accountability Over Corruption

The General Syndicate of the University Faculty Members in Libya demanded that all those who are found to have embezzled public money, tampered with the allocations of the Ministry of Education, and the rights of its employees be held accountable.

In a communiqué on Thursday, the syndicate demanded that all sub-unions, faculty members, and all those whose rights have been taken away go to the judiciary and supervisory agencies to file lawsuits and complaints.

It accused the Minister of Finance at the Government of National Accord (GNA), Faraj Bou Matari of silence over the transgressions. The statement added that “the money is spent in front of his eyes and with the signature of his financial supervisors. Everyone is aware that the matter does not end with the handover.”

It added that the arguments that were presented were “the lack of a sufficient budget to cover the expenses.” It explained that the reports of the regulatory agencies revealed exorbitant corruption and wasting of public money. It considered that “if a tenth of these funds were spent on education and its people, this situation would not have been reached.”
