The United Nation Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) hailed efforts by the Government of National Unity (GNU) for releasing 107 prisoners of war, in a further sign of reconciliation between Libya’s rival factions.

UNSMIL expressed its hope that this initiative is the beginning of a comprehensive national reconciliation program, calling for the release of all detainees before the holy month of Ramadan.

It commended the participation of members of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF), the Security Directorate of Zawiya, tribal sheikhs, and the people of Zawiya in this initiative. It affirmed its commitment to continue supporting these efforts, at the request of the GNU.

On Wednesday, the POW’s were released in the northwest coastal town of Zawiya, in a ceremony attended by members of Libya’s transitional government. The Head of Libya’s Presidential Council, Mohamed Al-Mnifi was among the attendees.
