Libyan Official: Italian Companies Have Large Share in Reconstruction

Adviser to the Minister of State for Economic Affairs, in the Libyan Government of National Unity (GNU), Ahmed Al-Ahjal announced a number of projects discussed by Prime Minister Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba, during his visit last Monday to Italy, and his participation in the “New Libya Presents Itself to Italian Companies” conference.

In statements to Sky News Arabia, Al-Ahjal said that the GNU has a great desire to strengthen the Libyan economy and revitalize work. He noted that Italy is a starting platform, and a very important economic partner in the Mediterranean.

He explained that the cooperation between Italy and Libya will include several aspects, including the migration crisis. As the security and stability of Libya will enhance the capacity of the oil sector, the state’s main financial lifeline.

Al-Ahjal revealed that the PM addressed the development, economic, and environmental goals of the future economy. He added that Dbaiba said that this will be achieved by increasing the focus on human capacity building and modernizing competencies in various scientific fields. This is part of the government’s endeavour to build and develop the infrastructure of the oil sector.

The Libyan and Italian sides also discussed the possibility of developing means of linking communications, by rehabilitating and strengthening the existing Libyan telecommunications network.

Al-Ahjal stressed that Italian companies will have a large share in the reconstruction of Libya. He pointed out that all agreements concluded with Italy in the past, will be reactivated.

Notably, Dbaiba confirmed that Italy is one of the primary partners for Libya in several sectors, the most important of which are oil, construction, and healthcare. He also mentioned projects to develop hospitals, build schools, develop infrastructure, and raise oil production rates.
