Protests broke out in Ghout al-Shaal district, west of central Tripoli, after a local named Ayman al-Daboub was killed on Monday by an armed group known as the “General Security”. The group is affiliated to the Ministry of Interior of the Government of National Accord (GNA).
Footage of the protests showed outraged locals blocking streets and setting car tires aflame.
Some locals reportedly took up arms and pursued members of the General Security armed group, which is led by Emad Trabelsi.
Protesters asked for Al-Daboub’s killer to be handed over after he escaped.
Tripoli, Libya’s capital and largest city, is plagued by armed groups who enjoy unparalleled liberties granted to them by the Interior Ministry in exchange for their loyalty and support in the war against Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA).
The GNA-affiliated armed groups continued to violate the rights of Ghout al-Shaal residents by kidnapping Libyan citizen Ihab, the brother of the late Ayoub Al-Daboub.
The situation is likely to deteriorate even further as violent confrontations between locals and the militias responsible for the murder of Ayman al-Daboub seem inevitable.
