On Saturday, the French Embassy in Libya welcomed the Parliament’s issuance of the President’s Elections Law and its transmission to the country’s High National Elections Commission (HNEC).

“We also encourage the Parliament to issue the Parliamentary Election Law without delay so the two ballots can take place on time on the 24th of December,” the Embassy said in a tweet.

It also praised all the efforts aim to achieve the Libyan people’s demand to exercise their right to choose their President

Notably, Libya’s Parliamentary Speaker on Thursday signed a law allowing a presidential election to take place in December.

Parliament sent a copy of the draft to the Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Ján Kubiš.

The President’s competencies include selecting the Prime Minister and assigning him to form a government, as well as being able to dismiss the Prime Minister. He is also given the power to choose a Vice President, provided that the Vice President and Prime Minister are from different regions than the President.

The President has been granted the power to perform the duties of the Supreme Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), to appoint and dismiss the Head of the General Intelligence Service, after approval of the Parliament. The President also has the right to appoint Ambassadors and representatives of Libya to international organizations, based on the proposal of the Foreign Minister.
