On Monday, the Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations on Libya (SASG), Stephanie Williams reiterated that the only way to resolve the crisis of legitimacy in Libya is through the ballot box.
This came during her meeting with Peace and Prosperity Party in Tripoli.
“Excellent meeting today at Peace and Prosperity Party’s HQ in Tripoli. I briefed the Party’s President Mr. Mohammed Khaled Al-Goweil and a diverse group of party members about the objectives of my mission in Libya as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Advisor,” Williams tweeted.
“We had an interesting exchange about the party’s views on the political and economic future of Libya, including putting elections back on track as a priority. I stressed the important role of political parties in the country’s institutional and political life and to lift the voices of nearly 3 million Libyans who registered to vote. I reiterated that the only way to resolve the crisis of legitimacy in Libya is through the ballot box,” she added.
Last week, Williams renewed her call for elections to be held within the timeframe set by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) Roadmap.
During her meeting with members of the High Council of State (HCS), Williams stressed that any solution must take into account the demand of the 2.5 million registered Libyan voters.
The HCS members highlighted the importance of a constitutional basis for the elections, after a lengthy discussion on the current challenges facing the electoral process.
On Saturday, Williams met with members of the General Union of Libyan Students in Tripoli.
In a tweet, Williams said that she had an inspiring conversation with the representatives, and commended their work and achievements in recent years, especially the reunification of the union.
