The Criminal Investigation Department, of the Benghazi Security Directorate announced that it had confiscated large quantities of expired drug’s hidden in the Benghazi cement factory.

The directorate added that the Head of the department, Suleiman Boushiba instructed an investigation after a tip was received. The expired medication was found in a warehouse, under the factory’s furnace.

The factory’s security and safety personnel stated that the supplies had been in the warehouse since December 2021, and were brought to the factory without the presence of the Municipal Guard.

Part of the medicines were destroyed, but a large quantity remained in the warehouse.

Libya’s political process has broken down again this year, after the collapse of elections scheduled for December. This prompted the eastern-based Parliament to appoint a new government, led by Fathi Bashagha. Incumbent PM, Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba has since refused to quit, and remains entrenched in Tripoli. This has risked a return to fighting, and threatened territorial divisions between rival factions.
