An Egyptian young man opened fire on a Libyan girl and her father while they were getting into their car in front of their house in the city of Al Bayda. They were taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
In a statement, Asa’ad Al Werfalli, a member of the Libyan Interior Ministry’s Media Office, stated that the Egyptian young man, Ragheb Khaled, opened fire in front of their house after they had rejected his marriage proposal several times.
On his part, Abdulkarim Qwaider, the girl’s cousin said, “Ragheb has been harassing and disturbing the girl inside the university campus for two years, but she had rebuffed his repeated romantic advances.”
He added that the Egyptian young man had proposed marriage to the girl, but her father’s refusal led him to take revenge on all the family.
Major General Khaled Al Basta, Security Official in Al Bayda, said that the security services arrested the Egyptian young man after he had fled the city of Al Bayda and hid in a house in Al Qubba city.
He noted the defendant has been referred to the Public Prosecution, in preparation for sending him for trial.
Last month, a similar incident happened when residents of the Egyptian city of Mansoura were rocked by the gruesome murder of a university student whose throat was slit on a busy street in front of hundreds of witnesses.
The killer, in a confession given to Prosecutors, said he had proposed marriage to Nayera Ashraf, 21, and her refusal led him to kill her.
This terrible crime shocked the people of Egypt who condemned it and deplorable comments flooded into social media, citizens demanded that the Egyptian authorities impose the most severe penalties against the accused.
Social media users expressed their anger after local media reported the motives for the crime.
