The General Secretariet of the Arab League participated in the third ‘International Follow Up Committee on Libya’ after the Berlin Conference.

The meeting was hosted via teleconference and chaired by Italy and Acting SRSG Stephanie Williams, with eighteen delegates from concerned countries. Regional and international organizations also attended.

Ambassador Hossam Zaki, the Assistant Secretary General and Head of the Arab League delegation, said that the meeting came at the invitation of Italy and the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

The latest political and military developments were reviewed, as well as possible ways to support Libyan-Libyan dialogue, and the work of UNSMIL.

Ambassador Zaki stressed that the priority of the Arab League was to implement a ceasefire, and work towards serious political dialogue between the warring parties.

The Ambassador mentioned that Italian Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio participated in the meeting’s closing session.

He noted that the Italian invitation came as a confirmation that the Follow-Up Committee was to be the primary forum for political and diplomatic discussion on Libya.

The Arab League will be responsible for organizing the next month’s meeting of the Follow-Up Committee.
