The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) said that it “takes note of the joint statement of the Speaker of the Libyan Parliament, and the President of the High Council of State (HCS) regarding their discussions in Cairo.”
In a thread on its Twitter account, UNSMIL “strongly encouraged the two chambers to now swiftly reach a complete and final agreement, including on the contentious issues to finalize the steps required to take the country to inclusive national elections within a specific timeframe.”
It reiterated the obligations of political leaders in Libya to “demonstrate a genuine and continuous commitment towards achieving a lasting peace, by building on previous agreements aimed at resolving the political crisis through elections as soon as possible.”
UNSMIL confirmed that its “position remains clear. A national compromise is urgently needed to establish a clear pathway to elections, with a specific timeline to open a new era for Libya, its neighbours, and the region.”
It added that the Libyan people “need and deserve to choose their leadership, with legitimacy restored to state institutions without further delay. UNSMIL, in line with its mandate, remains ready to support genuine initiatives aimed at achieving a national consensus towards a Libyan-Libyan solution, and to the protracted political crisis.”
Notably, Speaker of the Libyan Parliament, Ageela Saleh and Head of the HCS Khaled Al-Mishri announced their agreement to revoke the establishment of new Constitutional Court law.
The two chambers said in a joint statement on Friday, that the step was taken in a move to “fulfil the constitutional entitlement, as a basis for the elections process.”
This decision came “out of a sense of national responsibility, and in appreciation of the current circumstances the country is going through.”
“This joint statement comes to reassure all political parties regarding the controversy over the Constitutional Court law,” the statement concluded.
