On Saturday, the Spokesman for the US Department of State, Ned Price said that the US is “communicating regularly with Libyan leaders to stress the need for political unity and agreement on a path to holding elections, without further delay.”
In an interview with Libya Al-Ahrar TV channel, the US official confirmed that Washington “continues to stand by the Libyan people as they complete the democratic revolution that they started more than a decade ago.”
Price indicated that the Libyan leaders are “responsible for resolving the current political impasse, and completing the political transition in Libya.”
He added that he had nothing to comment regarding claims that the US has called for the government of Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba to extradite more Libyans “involved” in the Lockerbie bombing case. “We have nothing to announce currently, and we are reviewing the Ministry of Justice for more information on the case of Pan Am Flight 103,” Price said in the interview.
“We strongly support the call of the UN Envoy, Abdoulaye Bathily to meet with Libyan leaders to quickly complete the necessary procedures for holding elections,” Price noted.
He added, “Our message is consistent, clear, and based on the expressed desires of the Libyan people to see a political agreement that leads to stability, unity, the provision of services, and a viable path towards credible elections.”
He stressed that the US “shared the desire of all Libyans to see Libyan leaders adopt the necessary measures as quickly as possible, to set the electoral process in motion.”
Price refused to comment on the recent visit of the Director of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), William Burns to Libya.
Notably, Price recently denied reports that Washington was hosting a meeting of Western Envoys to Libya.
He claimed that these reports “are not accurate, and erroneous.” He added that the US is looking forward to hosting a future discussion, “but we haven’t confirmed any dates at this time.”
