Libya’s Minister of Local Government, Badr Al-Din Al-Toumi discussed the implementation and evaluation of several projects, in cooperation with the European Union.
According to a statement, this came during a meeting with the Director of the Governance Program at the European Union Mission in Libya, the Head of the technical team of the European Union Mousanada for Libya programme, Lily Habash, and the capacity-building advisor in the support project, Khaled Zidan.
The meeting discussed a number of issues, especially joint projects with the Ministry, opportunities, and the possibility of cooperation to implement these joint projects.
The meeting reviewed the latest results of the “Mousanada for Libya” programme funded by the European Union, the implementation status of the project, and the possibility of providing technical support to the Ministry.
Earlier this month, the European Union mission to Libya said that a “decentralized system not only achieves better services for citizens, but also contributes to achieving peace and security in the country.”
In a statement, it added that this is the motive behind the establishment of the “Support to Municipalities in Libya” project. This works with various Libyan municipalities to provide them with advice and training for high-quality services to the population.
The project is also collaborating with the Libyan authorities in developing a full decentralisation strategy. This will give municipalities the powers and financial resources needed to achieve decentralisation, and contribute to peace in Libya.
The project leads activities that promote dialogue between national and municipal authorities, and Libyan female representatives.
Women’s development and training centers are one of the most important achievements of this project. These centers provide a safe space for Libyan women, run by women where they can learn and exchange experiences. They also enable them to improve their management skills and knowledge of business development by providing services to their neighbourhoods. In order to become active in their communities, and thus participate in the development of municipalities in which they live.
The “Support to Municipalities in Libya” project is a project co-financed by the European Union and the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development. It is implemented by the German Foundation for International Cooperation, the Libyan Ministry of Local Government, and 30 partner municipalities.
