Libya & Greece Discuss Strengthening Trade

Libyan MP, Khalifa Al-Daghari met with the Consul of Greece in Benghazi, Stavros Venizelos. The two discussed enhancing bilateral cooperation, especially with regards to facilitating trade between the Green Mountain region and Greece, given the geographical proximity and joint historical relations.

Al-Daghari expressed his optimism that “Libya is heading towards more stability, which opens up opportunities for commercial cooperation with neighbouring countries in various fields.”

The MP also expressed his keenness to encourage Greek businessmen to “invest in the Al-Sahel municipality, given the distinct capabilities of the region, especially in the field of tourism.”

He confirmed his hope to benefit from Greece’s expertise in agriculture, fishing, restoration of antiquities, and youth training programs.

In turn, the Greek Consul affirmed his keenness to “facilitate the visits of businessmen from both sides, and to introduce investment opportunities in Libya because of the many and varied opportunities available there.”

Last month, the Speaker of the Libyan Parliament, Ageela Saleh met with a Member of the Greek Parliament, Andreas Loverdos in Benghazi.

According to the Spokesperson for the Libyan Parliament, Abdullah Blaiheg, the two sides discussed developments in the situation in Libya, and bilateral relations. Especially, at the level of Parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting was attended by the Director of the Office of Presidential Affairs, Awad Al-Fitouri, and Venizelos.

Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The county has for years been split between rival administrations, each backed by rogue militias and foreign governments.

The current stalemate grew out of the failure to hold elections in December 2021, and the refusal of Prime Minister Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba, who is leading the transitional government, to step down. In response, the country’s eastern-based Parliament appointed a rival Prime Minister, Fathi Bashagha, who has for months sought to install his government in Tripoli.
