On Tuesday, the German Ambassador to Libya, Michael Ohnmacht affirmed his “unwavering support for the High National Elections Commission’s (HNEC) efforts to conduct credible and free elections in Libya.”
In a meeting with Emad Al-Sayeh, the HNEC Head, Ohnmacht emphasised the “essential role of the elections in reflecting the Libyan voter’s will and aspirations for peace and stability.”
The discussion delved into the latest developments in the electoral processes, preparations of the Commission, and its readiness to execute the elections.
Both parties reviewed potential supportive contributions and expertise that could be provided in the field of election management and execution.
Al-Sayeh and Onmacht further discussed ways to “reinforce proposals and endeavours to ensure the success of the elections in line with international standards.”
Libya, a North African country, has been embroiled in a conflict since 2011, following the overthrow and subsequent death of its long-serving ruler, Muammar Gaddafi.
The power vacuum left in the aftermath of Gaddafi’s fall led to a power struggle between multiple factions, with the country effectively split into different regions controlled by different groups. The unrest has significantly impacted the nation’s political stability, economy, and quality of life for its citizens.
In an attempt to restore stability and democratic governance, numerous countries and international organisations have been supporting Libya’s transitional process. One such nation is Germany, which has been actively involved in peacekeeping and reconstruction efforts.
Ohnmacht’s recent affirmation of Germany’s support of Libya underscores the ongoing commitment from the international community to help Libya achieve stability and democratic governance through free and fair elections.
HNEC is responsible for preparing and managing elections in Libya, ensuring they are conducted fairly and transparently.
The discussions with the German Ambassador are indicative of the close cooperation between Germany and Libya, in their shared goal of peace and stability.
As the election approaches, continuous engagement from Germany and other international stakeholders remains crucial to ensure the Libyan elections are credible, transparent, and align with international standards.
