The Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf underscored the necessity of adopting a realistic strategy while addressing the Libyan crisis, as detailed in a report by Italy’s Nova news agency on Wednesday.
During an exclusive conversation with Nova on his inaugural visit to Italy, Attaf highlighted, “An essential prerequisite in the context of Libya is the cessation of hostilities. The lull in military conflicts paves the way for the exploration of a potential political solution.”
Attaf outlined Algeria’s standpoint, underlining three primary pillars:
“Firstly, we recognize and endorse the Government of National Unity (GNU), which has garnered recognition from the international community, chiefly the United Nations.”
“Secondly, we deem it vital for all relevant factions to convene and deliberate on transitioning to the electoral phase, encapsulating Parliamentary and Presidential elections,” Attaf added.
The Algerian FM noted, “The third pillar is our steadfast support for the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy, Abdoulaye Bathily in his pursuit to constitute a legal foundation for elections.”
Affirming the need for practicality in devising a political blueprint, he stated that, “The reality informs us that cooperative efforts towards orchestrating elections is the sole democratic and irreversible avenue to address the power predicament in Libya.”
Libya has been embroiled in a conflict since 2011, following the overthrow and subsequent death of its long-serving ruler, Muammar Gaddafi.
The power vacuum left in the aftermath of Gaddafi’s fall led to a power struggle between multiple factions, with the country effectively split into various regions, controlled by rival groups. The unrest has significantly impacted the nation’s political stability, economy, and quality of life for its citizens.
In an attempt to restore stability and democratic governance, numerous countries and international organizations have been supporting Libya’s transitional process. One such nation is Algeria, which has been actively involved in peacekeeping and reconstruction efforts.
