The Italian Defense Minister, Guido Crosetto discussed the global situation, especially the movements of the Wagner Group in Russia and their impact on the region, during his meeting with his US counterpart, Lloyd Austin in Washington.
Crosetto, who was on his first visit to the US said on Saturday that “Africa was at the heart of the US-Italian talks, with a focus on some countries such as Libya and Tunisia, and discussing Italy’s ‘Mati’ plan in the African continent.”
He pointed out that the US agreed on the need for “a different approach that allows African countries to increase the individual’s share of local production, while helping them develop without plundering their resources, as China and Russia do.”
Earlier, this month, Crosetto emphasised the “urgency to reconstruct Italy’s relations with Libya through peaceful dialogue.”
In his radio statement, which was broadcasted by Italy’s NOVA news agency, Crosetto acknowledged, “The West dismantled relations with Libya post-Gaddafi. It’s now imperative that we rebuild these ties, using dialogue as our primary tool.”
Crosetto stressed that “while such diplomatic journeys might be long and complex, Italy and Libya should strive to manage emergencies effectively, avoid disasters, and try to prevent departures.”
This renewed approach underscores the Italian government’s commitment to fostering diplomatic ties and building a solid foundation for the future of Italy-Libya relations. As the international community watches, the spotlight is on the potential of dialogue as a diplomatic tool to establish stability and strengthen alliances.
Libya has been in a state of ongoing political instability and conflict since the overthrow and death of its long-time ruler Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The nation has seen a rise of different factions vying for control, leading to civil unrest and violence.
Efforts have been made by the international community to mediate peace, and bring about political stability in Libya. One major component of these efforts has been the push for elections that can bring about a democratically elected government.
