US Reaffirms Commitment to Peace & Prosperity in Libya

The US Embassy in Libya issued a statement emphasising its dedication to enhancing peace, stability, and prosperity in Libya. According to the Embassy, the United States “remains a steadfast ally to Libyans in their pursuit of a brighter future.”

Marking the anniversary of the American Independence on 4 July 1776, the Embassy underlined Libya’s “ongoing journey towards unity and sovereignty. The Libyan people have voiced their desire for an end to political division, a move towards better living conditions, and the privilege to select their own leadership.”

This underscores the US government’s commitment to “aiding Libya in this transitional period, while reinforcing the importance of self-governance and democratic processes.”

Libya has been in a state of ongoing political and social unrest since the Arab Spring in 2011, which led to the ousting and subsequent death of the country’s long-time leader, Muammar Gaddafi. Following Gaddafi’s demise, Libya faced significant challenges, including political division, civil war, and the rise of militant groups.

Efforts are underway to conduct national elections in Libya, which are seen as a significant step towards resolving the political crisis and giving the Libyan people a chance to choose their leaders. The United States, among other international actors, supports this democratic transition.

Earlier today, the Libyan National Army’s (LNA) Commander-in-Chief, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, called for urgent action against the high levels of corruption in Libya.

Haftar also criticised several foreign officials, particularly the US Envoy, Richard Norland, for their “interference in Libyan affairs, which has deepened the divisions among the Libyan people.”

He called on these ambassadors to “stop meddling in the country’s internal affairs and to respect the Libyan people’s wishes.”

“The Libyan National Army is prepared to carry out its duties,” said Haftar, “and the Libyan people will have the opportunity to express their will in the upcoming elections, even if it takes some time.”

The call for action against corruption in Libya comes at a time when the country is facing political instability, and economic challenges.

The Libyan people have been suffering from the effects of the ongoing conflict and the mismanagement of the country’s resources. The international community has been working to mediate peace and bring about political stability in Libya, including efforts to hold free and fair elections.
