The human trafficking unit of Pakistan’s Federal Investigating Agency (FIA) has arrested the mastermind behind the recent Greek boat tragedy, as reported by The News on Monday.
The accused, Muhammad Saleem Sanyara, is the brother of Asif Sanyara, the main suspect in the boat accident.
Muhammad Sanyara collected millions of rupees to illegally transport Pakistanis to Europe, and other countries. The FIA has registered nine cases against the accused.
The FIA spokesperson stated that the accused went into hiding after the accident, and was arrested using the latest technology. Asif Sanyara, who is currently in Libya, has reportedly built numerous safe houses there.
Further investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
Last month, an overloaded fishing boat with a capacity of 400 people capsized and sank in open seas off Greece, with at least 350 Pakistanis on board.
The incident highlights the dangers and risks faced by those who attempt to cross the Mediterranean in search of a better future.
Last week, Pakistani police arrested another main human trafficker, named Muhammad Saeed.
The Pakistani authorities received complaints against four suspects involved in human trafficking. They were accused of receiving money, and pretending to provide work to two nationals in Greece.
The Punjab Police Spokesman said that the accused had received Rs 700,000 from the plaintiff, Bilal Shahid to send him to Greece.
The accused sent Shahid from Karachi Airport to Libya, via Qatar. Shahid was then received in Libya, and detained for three months alongside others. His father was forced to send $5,000 dollars to secure his release.
The suspects later sent Shahid to Greece by sea. During the trip, Libyan security agencies arrested him along with other passengers, and brought him to shore.
