The Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Abdoulaye Bathily held key meetings with the Italian and German Ambassadors, Gianluca Alberini and Michael Ohnmacht earlier today.
During his discussion with Alberini, Bathily spoke about Italy’s ongoing support for Libya. Alberini affirmed his government’s commitment to back UNSMIL and its initiatives, to promote an inclusive solution led by Libya itself, to resolve the existing deadlock.
In a separate meeting with Ohnmacht, Bathily underlined the necessity of reaching an agreed-upon and implementable legal framework for elections, and averting unilateral measures. He underscored that “it is incumbent on Libyan stakeholders to unite and discover solutions to the current impasse, based on compromise.”
Both discussions underscored a common agreement about the significance of all Libyan parties reaching consensus on the roadmap to elections. Bathily and the ambassadors concurred that “Libya’s stability is fundamental for the prosperity of its citizens, and for maintaining peace and security in neighbouring countries.”
Through these talks, Bathily confirmed the continued support of key international players for a Libyan-owned and Libyan-led political process, aiming to bring about an end to the protracted stalemate in the country.
Notably, UNSMIL has denied any intention to announce a roadmap to elections in Libya by Bathily.
UNSMIL said it has become aware of a “fabricated” story that is circulating in local and regional news networks, about an alleged plan to announce a roadmap.
The Mission noted that the false news is “part of an ongoing disinformation campaign to mislead the Libyan people.” It urged all media networks and social media influencers to rely on the Mission’s official website, and social media channels for accurate and authentic news and announcements.
It pointed out to the recent briefing by Bathily to the Security Council, where he emphasised his intention to intensify negotiations through constructive engagement with all stakeholders, and relevant institutions. This is to facilitate an inclusive and transparent settlement of the most contentious issues in the draft electoral laws prepared by the 6+6 Joint Committee.
The Mission’s goal is to ensure these draft laws are implementable, and lead to the holding of successful elections.
