Head of Election Commission Reviews Readiness for Elections

On Tuesday, Head of Libya’s High National Election Commission (HNEC) Emad Al-Sayeh briefed U.S. Ambassador to Libya Richard Norland on the role of the Commission. Al-Sayeh said HNEC was an independent institution, responsible for the preparation of peaceful and credible elections in Libya.

There is an increasing likelihood of a forthcoming ceasefire in the country, as well as the resumption of genuine political dialogue in the upcoming days. Al-Sayeh and Norland agreed that it was essential that the Commission be ready to conduct elections and that it receives the necessary support to do so.

The United States will communicate with HNEC in the upcoming period so that it is able to register citizens for the possibility of voting in future elections. Ambassador Norland praised the courage and commitment of Al-Sayeh in working to ensure the consolidation of electoral democracy in Libya.
