For the first time in close to a decade, an Iranian vessel has docked in Misrata port, marking a notable reinstatement of bilateral maritime trade.
This comes in the wake of Iranian authorities’ decision to reinstate its diplomatic mission in Libya, and recommence their activities at their embassy.
Einollah Souri, Head of the Iranian diplomatic delegation in Libya, said that during the past few days, “favourable negotiations have been held with Libyan officials. The negotiations indicate the strong will of the parties to develop relations, especially in the economic and commercial fields.”
In an attempt to bolster bilateral ties over the last few months, both the Libyan and Iranian authorities have made commitments to strengthen their diplomatic relations. Significantly, Libya has advanced its diplomatic representation in Tehran, from a chargé d’affaires to an ambassadorial level.
This important step followed the presentation of accreditation by the Libyan Ambassador to Iran, to Ibrahim Raisi, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, as reported by Iran’s ISNA news agency last week.
Tehran had previously declared its intention to reopen its embassy in Libya, and a diplomatic delegation was dispatched to Tripoli to facilitate the Iranian Embassy’s reopening.
According to Souri, Libya has “warmly received the Iranian embassy in Tripoli, and a series of meetings have been held between the two sides.”
