Sudanese Man Sentenced for Stabbing Libyan National in the UK

A Sudanese individual has been sentenced to 2 years and 8 months in prison for stabbing a Libyan national with whom he shared a residence. The case unfolded in Nottingham Crown Court, where it was revealed that the assailant had consumed 12 cans of beer before the attack.

Yahya Mahdi, the Sudanese national, informed British police that he had drunk 12 cans of beer and armed himself with a bread knife before launching the attack. Mahdi targeted his Libyan housemate, inflicting multiple stab wounds to the victim’s head and neck.

The incident took place on January 14th at their shared residence located in Sneinton Boulevard, Nottingham. During his confession, Mahdi stated that he disliked his housemate because he was from Libya, the country where his own brother had passed away.

Nottingham police reported that just before the attack, the victim had heard Mahdi breaking things and shouting in the house. Mahdi knocked on the victim’s door, pretending to be a police officer. Fortunately, after the attack, the victim managed to push Mahdi away and escape. Police found the victim bleeding outside the residence, and he was swiftly transported to the hospital, placed in intensive care, and fortunately recovered well, being discharged five days later.

Mahdi pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm and was imprisoned last Monday. Detective Con Rory Greer described Mahdi as a “dangerous individual,” noting that “it was a horrific attack, and fortunately, the victim did not sustain life-threatening injuries.”

Greer added, “after escaping war in Libya, the victim came to the United Kingdom as an asylum seeker hoping to create a better life for himself. He thought he would be safer here, but sadly, this was not the case due to the actions of a violent man.”
