On Tuesday former president of the High Council of State (HCS) Abdulrahman al-Suwaihli held a meeting in Tunis with U.S. Ambassador to Libya Richard Norland.

In a statement on Twitter, the U.S. Embassy to Libya said that the meeting tackled the urgent need to suspend the military campaign against the Libyan capital, Tripoli.

During the meeting the pair discussed ways to resume political negotiations that would put an end to the civil conflict in Libya. According to the US Embassy, the unprecedented levels of foreign interference in Libya have harmed the North African country’s sovereignty and security.

The meeting also discussed international efforts to solve the crisis in Libya. The two men addressed the role of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) following the resignation of Ghassan Salame and what the US can do to assist the political process.
