On Wednesday, the Libyan Parliament-designated Prime Minister, Osama Hammad, along with Major General Saddam Haftar honoured the Egyptian field hospital’s medical team in the city of Derna.
The ceremony was held at Al-Abraq Airport, and attended by Faraj Aqame, the Deputy Minister of the Interior, and several military and security leaders. This included the presentation of the Libyan government’s shield, and medals to the medical team.
During the event, the Prime Minister, Osama Hamad and Haftar commended the efforts of the medical team, expressing their gratitude for “everything they have provided to our people in the eastern region, especially the city of Derna.”
In return, the Head of the Egyptian delegation expressed his “pride and happiness at this recognition,” praising the security and safety enjoyed by the eastern region under the overall leadership of the armed forces.
Notably, the High Preparatory Committee of the International Conference for the Reconstruction of Derna convened on Saturday.
The session unfolded in the heart of Derna, and was graced by a diverse array of stakeholders, including numerous members from the High Preparatory Committee, the Scientific Engineering Committee, the Deputy Minister of Local Governance, mayors from the impacted municipalities, and a cadre of respected elders and dignitaries from Derna.
During the session, numerous ideas, propositions, and conceptualisations regarding the reconstruction of Derna, and similarly impacted locales were explored. A uniform, unequivocal objective underscored all deliberations: ensuring that the reconstruction adheres to the zenith of safety and security protocols, for all afflicted areas.
In the aftermath of the devastating floods that decimated entire neighbourhoods in eastern Libya, regional authorities have announced plans for an international conference focused on reconstruction.
Last week, Hamad provided a comprehensive brief on the government’s preparedness and strategy for reconstructing Derna, and areas adversely affected by the deadly storm Daniel.
This came during a meeting with the Speaker of the Parliament, Ageela Saleh. The meeting was also attended by the Chairman of the Benghazi-based Reconstruction and Stabilisation Committee.
