Italy’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Emanuela Del Rey, has confirmed that Italy is the only European country carrying out direct evacuations of refugees from Libya.

Del Rey’s remarks came at an online seminar organised by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

If the Italian experience is repeated by other European countries, it will be much easier to get the refugees out of Libyan detention centers, she added.

She stressed that working on illegal immigration is necessary more than ever in this difficult historical situation.
