On Tuesday, Josep Borrell, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, emphasised the critical need for progress in Libya’s political process.
This statement came during his meeting with Mousa Al-Koni, the Deputy Head of the Libyan Presidential Council. This high-level engagement underscores the EU’s commitment to supporting Libya’s journey towards stability and peace.
During the dialogue, Borrell stressed the importance of a political resolution, brokered by the United Nations, rooted in an inclusive dialogue that integrates all Libyan stakeholders. The aim is clear: to pave the way for elections, essential for establishing a legitimate and democratic governance structure in Libya.
The discussions also delved into enhancing EU-Libya cooperation in diverse fields. Key among these was the management and governance of migration – a critical issue given Libya’s strategic position as a gateway to Europe. The EU and Libya are exploring ways to improve regional cooperation, especially with the Sahel region, recognising that stability in Libya is intrinsically linked to broader regional security.
This meeting reaffirms the EU’s sustained support for the Libyan people’s aspirations to establish a peaceful, stable, and prosperous country. It reflects the EU’s comprehensive strategy in North Africa, where Libya’s stability is integral to regional security and economic prosperity. The EU’s support extends beyond political reconciliation, encompassing socio-economic development, infrastructure restoration, and social unity.
Moreover, the EU’s engagement in Libya aligns with its strategic interests in ensuring Mediterranean stability. A stable Libya contributes to mitigating illegal migration challenges, enhancing energy security, and bolstering counter-terrorism efforts.
As Libya navigates its path towards stability and democracy, the EU’s role remains pivotal in the international community’s efforts to support this transition. This collaboration is crucial not only for Libya, but also for the security and prosperity of the broader region.
