Libya’s path towards national elections and political stability was the central theme of recent high-level meetings involving Libyan and American officials.
Emad Al-Sayah, the Head of Libya’s High National Elections Commission (HNEC), and US Special Envoy to Libya, Richard Norland discussed strategies to ensure successful electoral processes in the North African nation.
Norland reaffirmed his commitment to Libya’s democratic process, highlighting the continuous technical and consultative support from the United States. This support is aimed at facilitating free and credible elections, which reflect the aspirations of the Libyan electorate.
Norland also expressed appreciation for HNEC’s dedication to preparing for municipal elections, an essential step towards broader national governance and stability.
In a related engagement, Norland and Jeremy Berndt, the Acting Charge d’Affairs of the US Embassy in Libya, met with Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, the Commader-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army (LNA). Their discussion centered on supporting UN Envoy to Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily’s efforts to reconcile various Libyan stakeholders. These are crucial in resolving the ongoing political challenges that hinder the election process and the establishment of a unified government.
These meetings underscore the international commitment to Libya’s journey towards democracy and national unity. As the country prepares for these crucial elections, support from the US and the involvement of key Libyan figures highlight the concerted efforts to navigate the country through its complex political landscape.
The US officials also met with a team from the Benghazi Scouts and Guides. They discussed the initial phases of implementing a program funded by the United States to provide psychological support to the victims of the September floods.
The US Embassy stated that the program includes training 65 scout leaders, equipping them with essential skills to assist children and families affected by the floods.
Ambassador Norland said, “As a former scout, I had the honor of meeting with Libyan scout leaders who are working on the front lines, providing vital support to those affected by the destructive floods in eastern Libya.”
He commended the heroic efforts of Libyan scout leaders, considering them a “source of inspiration for young volunteers and society members, striving to create a better future for the Libyan people.”
