Libyan MP, Abdel-Moneim Al-Arfi has highlighted the escalating concerns of the White House regarding the widespread corruption and illicit smuggling of precious metals from Libya. This statement was made during a telephone conversation with the “Maghreb Voices” news website.
Al-Arfi emphasized that Washington currently holds several critical cards in its efforts to achieve its goal of organizing elections, and establishing a legitimate government in Libya. He pointed out that a serious file exists in Libya, which has become a significant concern for the White House, especially with the extensive corruption and illegal smuggling activities of funds and precious metals to foreign countries.
The MP added, “Security entities in Washington are particularly worried about the routes of these financial transfers, especially if they are linked to dangerous terrorist organizations that threaten US national security.” Al-Arfi noted that major political parties have become involved in this issue, a fact well-known to American officials.
Al-Arfi informed that any potential actions taken by Washington to seize or freeze these assets abroad, could lead to significant legal troubles for the officials involved in corruption, in front of international bodies. He affirmed that this issue represents a substantial leverage point for Washington in achieving its objectives related to the elections, and political settlement in Libya.
