On Sunday, the Libyan Parliament commemorated the nation’s 72nd Independence Day with a heartfelt statement to the Libyan people, emphasising the historical importance and enduring value of this day. The House marked the occasion as a reminder of the sacrifices made by previous generations in achieving national independence and unity.
In the statement, it expressed “immense pride and honour in joining all Libyans in celebrating the 72nd anniversary of their country’s independence. This day was highlighted as a testament to the determination and belief of Libya’s forebears in the nation’s unity and their triumphant struggle to attain independence.”
Adding his voice to the celebrations, Mohammed Takala, Chairman of the High Council of State (HCS), released a video message extending congratulations to the Libyan people. He stressed the need for a “cohesive national project grounded in principles of freedom, social justice, comprehensive reconciliation, and the establishment of a state based on civil governance, law, and fair judiciary.”
This commemoration occurs amid Libya’s ongoing journey to find lasting peace and stability following years of political upheaval. Since the 2011 uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has experienced significant political fragmentation, with various factions and interim governments contending for authority.
The emphasis on a national project underscores the current challenges in building a unified and stable government. As Libya marks its 72nd Independence Day, the statements reflect a collective aspiration for a Libya that can move past its current challenges, towards a future of peace, unity, and prosperity, honouring the legacy of those who fought for the nation’s independence.
