The Libyan city of Derna is poised for a significant transformation with the Derna Reconstruction Fund signing crucial contracts with Egypt’s Arab Contractors Company.
This move, announced by the Libyan Parliament-designate government marks a substantial step in the post-conflict reconstruction of Libya. The focus of these contracts lies in rebuilding critical infrastructure in Derna, particularly targeting bridges devastated by the floods from the Mediterranean storm, Daniel.
Key projects include the construction of new bridges at the western entrance of Derna, over Wadi Abu Mahbool and Wadi Markos. These bridges form a vital component of the city’s restoration, facilitating economic rejuvenation and connectivity.
Bilgasim Khalifa Haftar, the Executive Director of the Derna Reconstruction Fund, and Ahmed Al-Assar, Chairman of the Egyptian Arab Contractors Company signed the contracts, emphasizing the urgency of the reconstruction work. Haftar highlighted the need for rapid progress in rebuilding efforts, while maintaining high standards.
Furthermore, the government, headed by Prime Minister Osama Hammad, has been actively involved in the reconstruction efforts.
This initiative reflects a broader commitment to rebuilding and modernizing the city’s infrastructure, including water and sewage systems, and establishing new desalination plants.
The collaboration with Egypt and engagement with an Emirati consortium underscore the international dimension of Libya’s reconstruction efforts. This partnership is not just about rebuilding what was lost, but about reimagining and transforming Derna into a modern, resilient urban space.
The reconstruction of Derna is a beacon of hope and progress, symbolizing Libya’s resurgence from conflict and natural disasters. This project sets a precedent for redevelopment initiatives across Libya, aiming to create modern, well-equipped cities out of post-conflict zones. Through these concerted efforts, Libya is not only repairing the damages of the past but is also paving the way for a future marked by development, stability, and prosperity.
