Firearms & Grenades Seized During Security Operations in Benghazi

On Thursday, the Benghazi Security Directorate announced the seizure of firearms and hand grenades during security stops conducted by police.

According to a statement, security stops and searches conducted by the Sidi Khalifa Police Center led to the discovery of firearms, along with abandoned ammunition and shells in an open area.

The security forces handed over the confiscated weapons and ammunition to the relevant authorities.

Last week, the Spokesman for the Libyan National Army (LNA), Brigadier General Ahmed Al-Mismari stressed the LNA’s commitment to “maintaining security, thwarting external threats, and preventing the flow of weapons, ensuring the safety of Libya.”

In a televised statement, Al-Mismari highlighted the success in forming anti-terrorism units in 2023, and the strategic training plan implemented for the armed forces.

He emphasised the impact of military developments in neighbouring countries on Libya’s security. Especially in the south, where the Armed Forces effectively countered Chadian militia movements.

Specialized units combating terrorism were established, demonstrating flexibility in responding to various challenges.
Al-Mismari underscored the LNA’s foundation in principles since 2014, with soldiers trained to fight under diverse circumstances. Despite financial constraints and governmental negligence, internal cohesion remains a priority.

Noteworthy developments in 2023 include the creation of new military departments, to align with modern military dynamics. Security units’ joint chiefs of staff were formed, incorporating independent security units, he said.

Al-Mismari stressed that “security is a fundamental human requirement provided by the LNA, paving the way for developmental initiatives.” He asserts that “the media has documented the Armed Forces’ efforts during the Derna events, emphasizing the challenges faced.”

Referring to the tragedy in Derna, Al-Mismari acknowledged that it “surpassed all preparations and efforts.”

He noted that training and preparation for enhancing combat readiness were focal points for the Armed Forces, as well as addressing emergencies effectively. Successful security imposition in the south, including Sebha and other municipalities, has been achieved through these operations.

“Training and development across various military departments, including a focus on individual and institutional competence, are key aspects of military establishment improvement,” he said.
