Al-Mnifi Urges End to Foreign Interference in Libya

On Saturday, the Head of Libya’s Presidential Council, Mohamed Al-Mnifi delivered a powerful message at the 19th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Uganda. He called for the end of all external political interference in Libya. The statement comes at a critical juncture for Libya, which has been grappling with a complex transitional phase for over a decade.

Al-Mnifi highlighted that Libya’s transitional period, extending beyond 12 years has exhausted its citizens. “The time has arrived to conclude these interminable transitional phases, and enable the Libyan people to access the ballot boxes rightfully. It’s crucial to capitalize on the current stability in the country and build upon it.”

He acknowledged the efforts of the UN Mission (UNSMIL) in steering dialogues among Libyan factions, and appreciated the African Union’s role in bolstering national reconciliation. He also valued the contributions of nations positively aiding Libya’s political process, and supporting the country’s leadership and solutions.

However, the core of the address was a strong demand for all foreign entities to refrain from any political intervention, in Libya’s internal matters. This plea reflects Libya’s ongoing struggles since the 2011 overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi, characterized by political disarray, and external influences that have impeded its path to stability and democracy.

The Libyan Presidential Council, established under the 2015 Libyan Political Agreement, is pivotal in navigating the country towards unity and peace. Yet, the road remains fraught with challenges, including internal divisions and external influences shaping Libya’s political scene.

Al Mnifi’s call marks a significant stance by Libyan leadership, seeking greater sovereignty, and reduced foreign involvement. He underscored the need for a Libyan-led solution, focusing on national reconciliation and democratic processes, to resolve the country’s prolonged crisis.
