Egyptian Companies to Construct 11 New Bridges in East Libya

The Libyan Parliament-designated government, led by Prime Minister Osama Hammad, announced that the Reconstruction and Stability Committee, along with the Fund for the Reconstruction of Derna and Affected Areas, has signed major contracts with Egyptian companies for the construction of 11 new bridges, spread across the cities of Derna, Benghazi, and Ajdabiya.

The two bodies signed significant contracts with the Egyptian companies, Neom and Wadi El Nile, according to the government. The new contracts include the construction of six bridges in the city of Derna, two bridges will be constructed in the city of Ajdabiya, and three bridges in Benghazi.

Earlier this month, the Derna Reconstruction Fund signed crucial contracts with Egypt’s Arab Contractors Company.

This move marks a substantial step in the post-conflict reconstruction of Libya. The focus of these contracts lies in rebuilding critical infrastructure in Derna, particularly targeting bridges devastated by the floods from the Mediterranean storm, Daniel.

Key projects include the construction of new bridges at the western entrance of Derna, over Wadi Abu Mahbool and Wadi Markos. These bridges form a vital component of the city’s restoration, facilitating economic rejuvenation and connectivity.

Bilgasim Khalifa Haftar, the Executive Director of the Derna Reconstruction Fund, and Ahmed Al-Assar, Chairman of the Egyptian Arab Contractors Company signed the contracts. Haftar highlighted the need for rapid progress in rebuilding efforts, while maintaining high standards.

This initiative reflects a broader commitment to rebuilding and modernising the city’s infrastructure, including water and sewage systems, and establishing new desalination plants.

The collaboration with Egypt and engagement with an Emirati consortium underscore the international dimension of Libya’s reconstruction efforts. This partnership is not just about rebuilding what was lost, but about reimagining and transforming Derna into a modern, resilient urban space.
