US Stresses Support for Libyan Army Forces’ Role in National Security

On Tuesday, the Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army (LNA) Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar hosted a high-level US delegation in Benghazi. During the meeting, they brought into sharp focus the critical role of Libya’s military in maintaining the country’s stability.

This encounter, involving key US officials like Special Envoy Richard Norland, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Josh Harris, and Acting US Ambassador to Libya, Jeremy Brent, underscores a significant international stance on Libya’s path to stability.

The dialogue highlighted the need for a cooperative effort in battling terrorism and extremism, recognizing the LNA as a central pillar in safeguarding Libya’s security. This acknowledgement by the US representatives resonates deeply within Libya’s ongoing struggle for peace and stability. Especially after the upheaval following the 2011 revolution, which ousted Muammar Gaddafi.

Libya’s strategic geopolitical position, and its role as a significant oil-producing country have always made it a focal point in regional and global politics. Since the revolution, the country has been mired in internal conflict, with various factions and external players vying for influence. The LNA has been influential in combating various extremist groups, and attempting to bring some semblance of order, especially in the eastern parts of the country.

The US emphasis on propelling Libya’s political process toward elections reflects a broader international commitment to supporting the establishment of a stable, democratic governance structure. The involvement of the United Nations Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) is seen as pivotal in this regard, with a call for increased efforts to cater to the Libyan populace’s aspirations.

This engagement highlights the US’ renewed focus on Libya, a country critical to North African stability and an essential player in the Mediterranean region. It signals an awareness of the need for a nuanced approach to Libya, one that balances military cooperation with political dialogue, aiming to foster a stable environment conducive to long-term peace and prosperity.
