On Saturday, Libya’s Head of the Presidential Council, Mohamed Al Mnifi, expressed strong approval of the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) recent ruling. This ruling compels Israel to ensure the delivery of essential services and humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. This acknowledgment by the ICJ highlights the international community’s concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and marks a critical step towards addressing it.

In a statement, Al Mnifi underscored Libya’s resolve to stand by the Palestinian cause, announcing Libya’s participation alongside South Africa in the legal challenge against Israeli apartheid actions. Libya is scheduled to present its case to the ICJ on February 22nd, advocating for the rights of Palestinians and condemning the apartheid measures enforced by Israel.

The ICJ’s decision mandates Israel to undertake immediate and substantial actions to supply fundamental services and humanitarian aid to Gaza. With the aim of alleviating the severe living conditions endured by its residents. This directive emphasised Israel’s need to align with international legal and humanitarian norms.

Highlighting the importance of the ICJ’s verdict, the Al Mnifi stressed the need for an immediate cessation of military activities to facilitate the ruling’s implementation. He hailed the decision as a triumph for human rights and justice. He advocates for a ceasefire as the sole means to halt the Israeli military’s onslaught against defenseless civilians and critical infrastructure in Gaza.

Al Mnifi’s remarks shed light on the significance of this legal development as a pivotal moment for international justice. It calls for united efforts within the United Nations (UN) to end the decades-long suffering and genocide faced by the Palestinian people.

Notably, the Arab League has officially welcomed Libya’s decision to join South Africa in a legal action against Israel, for its violations against Palestinians.

During a session of the Arab League, the Council expressed its strong condemnation of Israel’s ongoing aggression towards Palestinian civilians. The blockade of Gaza was highlighted as a particularly grave concern, labeling it as a form of genocide.

The meeting focused on urging the United States, and other countries supporting Israel in the Security Council to adhere to international law. The Security Council stressed the importance of a comprehensive ceasefire and called for Israel to cease its military operations, end the Gaza blockade, and halt forced displacement activities.
