Russia Highlights Challenges in Libyan Peace Process

On Thursday, Russia voiced skepticism about the near-term prospects for a peace settlement in Libya, acknowledging its close monitoring of the situation.

In a statement to the United Nations (UN) Security Council concerning Libya, Russia’s Envoy highlighted the prolonged nature of the current instability and stressed that comprehensive national elections represent the most viable pathway out of the crisis.

Russia’s statement underscored the importance of including all prominent Libyan figures who have garnered public support in the forthcoming elections. Russia stressed that the exclusion of any key players could undermine the legitimacy and effectiveness of the electoral process.

He also reiterated the indispensable role of the UN in spearheading a political process that is authentically Libyan-led, emphasising the need for international support that respects Libya’s sovereignty and the aspirations of its people.

Moreover, Russia expressed support for a gradual and balanced approach to the withdrawal of foreign military entities from Libya. This move is viewed as essential for restoring national sovereignty and stability. This stance reflects Russia’s recognition of Libya’s critical impact on the security dynamics of North Africa and the Mediterranean region.

Russia also pointed to the historical failures of externally imposed solutions in Libya. Russia suggested that genuine reconciliation and progress can only be achieved through dialogue and consensus among Libyan factions. The anticipation of a successful reconciliation conference in Sirte was highlighted as a potential turning point in the peace process. It offers a glimmer of hope for a unified and stable Libya.
