Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum, Tarek El Molla, recently engaged in talks with Farhat Bengdara, the chairman of the Libyan National Oil Corporation (NOC), to discuss the potential involvement of Egyptian petroleum companies in projects within Libya. The discussion, held on Monday, aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, with a focus on leveraging Egyptian expertise in Libya’s oil and gas projects.
A statement from the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum announced plans to organize a meeting for Libyan representatives with key Egyptian petroleum companies, including ENPPI, Petrojet, Sun Misr, and Petromaint, to explore opportunities for collaboration in Libya.
The discussions took place during the Egypt International Energy Conference and Exhibition and were reported by the Arab World News Agency. El Molla highlighted the Egyptian petroleum sector’s readiness to collaborate on Libyan projects and offered training support through Egypt’s specialized petroleum training centers, in response to a request from Libya.
Bengdara emphasized the potential for cooperation with Egypt, noting the historical contributions of Egyptian petroleum companies to projects in Libya. He expressed Libya’s interest in employing Egyptian services for oil and gas well drilling, aiming to boost production and expand exploration and drilling activities.
This engagement marks a significant step towards enhancing cooperation between Egypt and Libya in the oil and gas sector, with the potential for mutual benefits to both countries’ energy industries.
The backdrop of this collaboration is Libya’s ongoing conflict and political instability since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that overthrew Muammar Gaddafi. The turmoil has affected Libya’s oil-dependent economy, with repercussions for oil production levels and global market prices, underscoring the importance of stable and cooperative regional energy partnerships.
