Libya Receives WFME International Recognition

In a significant advancement for Libyan higher education, the Quality Assurance and Accreditation Centre of Educational and Training Institutions has been granted international recognition by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). This was announced by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the outgoing Government of National Unity (GNU).

The Ministry, in its statement, lauded the concerted efforts of the government and its teams in achieving this recognition. It extended gratitude to all technical teams that prepared the center’s application in line with WFME requirements. Special acknowledgment was given to the medical faculties at the universities of Tripoli, Misrata, Benghazi, and the Libyan International University for Medical Sciences for their pivotal role.

The World Federation for Medical Education, a non-governmental organisation, plays a crucial role in enhancing the quality of medical education globally. It is committed to elevating educational standards and promoting the highest scientific and ethical standards in medical education. By setting benchmarks for medical training and encouraging the accreditation of medical schools, WFME contributes significantly to the global healthcare education landscape. It also oversees the World Directory of Medical Schools, ensuring the maintenance of high educational standards worldwide.

Last month, the Al-Noor campaign team, specialising in ophthalmology and eye surgery at the Libyan Sebha Medical Centre, successfully performed over 60 surgical procedures on Friday. The surgeries varied from cataract removal, glaucoma treatment, retinal procedures, to surgeries for strabismus (cross-eye condition).
