Germany’s Special Envoy to Libya, Christian Buck, expressed his country’s support for the efforts of the Libyan High National Election Commission (HNEC) to conduct elections according to the highest global standards.
During a meeting with HNEC’s Chairman, Emad Al-Sayeh, Buck affirmed Germany’s readiness to provide technical and advisory support to enhance the commission’s readiness for the upcoming elections.
This visit comes as part of the international community’s support for the democratic process in Libya and to assess the HNEC’s readiness to conduct municipal council elections scheduled for this year.
Notably, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Libya disclosed that Germany has provided a substantial grant of €205 million to enhance the delivery of primary healthcare services across 12 municipalities in Libya.
This initiative is part of the “Enhancing the Provision of Primary Healthcare Services in Libya” project, undertaken by the German Agency for International Cooperation on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
The project aims to fortify the capabilities of Libya’s primary healthcare system, targeting approximately 175,000 individuals, including 35,000 highly vulnerable children, 14,000 pregnant and lactating women, and aims to improve access to services.
It also includes training for nearly 260 healthcare workers, equipping facilities, implementing an electronic vaccine tracking system, and fostering community health initiatives in seven municipalities.
This funding comes in response to the compounded challenges of political instability, armed conflicts, the COVID-19 pandemic, and economic shocks that have significantly burdened Libya’s healthcare infrastructure.
UNICEF Libya expressed its gratitude towards the German government, represented by the German Agency for International Cooperation, for supporting maternal and newborn health and nutrition programs, which are critical for the agency.
This contribution will be directed towards two of UNICEF’s most significant programs, in collaboration with Libya’s Primary Health Care Institute under the Ministry of Health.
