Libya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Taher El-Sonni, held a pivotal meeting with the Assistant Secretary-General and Special Adviser on Internal Displacement, Robert Piper. The meeting focused on the critical task assigned to the Special Adviser to reform the UN’s approach to internal displacement.
In a significant development aimed at addressing the global challenge of internal displacement, Piper emphasised the necessity of restructuring the support provided by the UN. He highlighted the need for a more holistic approach to the issue, linking it to broader peacebuilding discussions.
Piper pointed out that the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) has recently surged globally and that the current tools at the UN’s disposal are insufficient to effectively tackle this growing problem.
Piper also commended the national efforts made to address the displacement issue, which he observed first-hand during his visit to Libya in the latter part of last year.
He praised the support extended by the government and national authorities in managing this file and the local reconciliations achieved, as noted in El-Sonni’s statement.
The meeting between El-Sonni and Piper marks a crucial step towards enhancing the UN’s strategy for supporting IDPs, acknowledging the escalating global crisis of internal displacement.
With an increased focus on comprehensive and integrated support, the UN aims to improve the living conditions of millions of IDPs worldwide while striving for durable solutions to their plight.
