On Monday, Abdoulaye Bathily, the UN’s Special Envoy to Libya, met with German Ambassador Michael Unmacht to discuss the political situation and recent progress in Libya.
Bathily emphasized the necessity for all major Libyan factions to actively engage in resolving the country’s prolonged political deadlock. He called for increased and coordinated international support for Libya, highlighting the ongoing efforts of Libya’s regional and international partners to assist the nation in overcoming its political challenges. This meeting reflects the sustained global commitment to aiding Libya through its complex political environment, which has been marked by divisions since the revolution in 2011 that resulted in Muammar Gaddafi’s ouster.
Libya has been mired in conflict and instability since 2011, with rival factions and militias, backed by various international actors, competing for dominance. The United Nations has been at the forefront of initiatives aimed at stabilizing Libya, advocating for the establishment of a unified national government.
The country’s stability is essential for its own prosperity, as well as for regional security, managing migration flows to Europe, and maintaining global oil market stability. Germany has played a key role in these international stabilization efforts, notably hosting the Berlin Conference on Libya in January 2020 to garner unified international support for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
The talks between Bathily and Unmacht are part of continued diplomatic endeavors to achieve a lasting resolution to the conflict in Libya. The international community, with the UN leading the way, underlines the significance of a political process led by Libyans to ensure enduring peace.
These efforts aim to break the political impasse and pave the way for elections, seen as vital for legitimizing Libya’s governance structures and advancing national progress.
