The Derna Reconstruction Fund, focused on rehabilitating cities affected by damage, recently welcomed a delegation of French experts from SIDEM, the manufacturer of the Soussa water treatment station, for a technical inspection aimed at identifying the station’s spare parts needs for comprehensive maintenance.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance the station’s production capacity, enabling it to support the developmental plans and programs in the city of Soussa.
According to the Fund’s Facebook page, the visit was supervised by the head of the Libya Reconstruction and Development Fund, underscoring a commitment to fully refurbish the Soussa station and improve its operational efficiency.
This move is aligned with the strategic objectives set by the Derna Reconstruction Fund to develop water resources and improve their quality for the benefit of residents, aligning with the urban development efforts in the city of Soussa.
The catastrophic floods in Derna, Libya, occurred on the night of September 10–11, 2023, following the collapse of two dams in the aftermath of Storm Daniel. The dam’s collapse released an estimated 30 million cubic meters of water, leading to flooding downstream as the Wadi Derna overflowed its banks and partially destroyed the city of Derna.
These floods were part of a larger event of catastrophic flooding that struck eastern Libya, killing more than 4,000 people and leaving some 10,000 missing. The heavy rains were generated by Storm Daniel, a strong Mediterranean cyclone, which brought widespread flooding to the region.
