Authorities in the Sirte municipality in Libya destroyed tons of spoiled meat and tobacco on Sunday morning. This occurred under the supervision of the municipality’s mayor, Mukhtar Al-Maadani.
The destruction event was attended by Sirte’s Municipal Guard branch Chief, Brigadier Jumaa Anbia, alongside Directors of the municipal environmental sanitation, food and drug control offices, and a representative from the Misrata public prosecution office specialised in crime control.
Brigadier Anbia reported that the destroyed items included two thousand cartons of expired, unfit-for-consumption, and unidentifiable cigarette tobacco, as well as approximately seven tons of spoiled red and white meat. These items had been seized by the Sirte Municipal Guard’s inspection patrols over the past few days.
Mayor al-Maadani commended the efforts of the Sirte Municipal Guard in seizing tons of spoiled goods, tobacco, and meat that pose health risks to citizens. He confirmed the municipality of Sirte’s support for the Municipal Guard to enable them to efficiently perform their duties.
Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Moammar Gaddafi in 2011. The county has for years been split between rival administrations.
Libya’s economy, heavily reliant on oil, has suffered due to the ongoing conflict. The instability has led to fluctuations in oil production and prices, impacting the global oil market and Libya’s economy.
The conflict has led to a significant humanitarian crisis in Libya, with thousands of people killed, and many more displaced. Migrants and refugees using Libya as a transit point to Europe have also faced dire conditions.
The planned elections for December 2021 were delayed due to disagreements over election laws and the eligibility of certain candidates. This delay has raised concerns about the feasibility of a peaceful political transition.
Despite the ceasefire, security remains a significant concern with sporadic fighting and the presence of mercenaries and foreign fighters. The unification of the military and the removal of foreign forces are crucial challenges.
