Libyan Foreign Minister of the Parliament-designate government, Abdel-Hadi al-Hwaij, welcomed Moroccan Consul General Said Benkirane at the Ministry’s headquarters in Benghazi.

Al-Hwaij reiterated his appreciation for the Moroccan consulate operating in Benghazi, praising the historical ties between the two countries. He commended Morocco’s efforts in addressing the Libyan issue, striving for a solution led by Libyans themselves.

The Libyan Minister stressed the importance of expediting the establishment of air and sea routes between the two neighboring nations, particularly significant amidst Libya’s urban renaissance. He emphasised the interest in benefiting from Moroccan expertise in workforce and training sectors.

Additionally, al-Hwaij highlighted the significance of Moroccan companies resuming operations in Libya, especially in various reconstruction fields. He underscored the importance of initiating visa issuance for Libyans, whether for study, work, or other purposes.

The Moroccan Consul affirmed his commitment to strengthening these relations and to work towards achieving the outcomes of this meeting.

Last month in Tripoli, Libyan Transport Minister of the Government of National Unity (GNU), Mohamed Al-Shahoubi, discussed with his Moroccan counterpart, Mohamed Abdeljalil, and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita the resumption of flights between the two countries.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Ministerial Conference on Middle-Income Municipalities held in the city of Rabat, Morocco, from February 5-6.

The two sides also discussed activating the operations of Moroccan airlines within Libya, as well as establishing a maritime route and facilitating entry visa procedures for citizens.

In December, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior in the Libyan Parliament-designated government, Faraj Aqaim, discussed visa facilitation procedures with Benkirane.

The meeting, held in Benghazi, focused on the potential opening of air travel between Benghazi and Morocco.

Aqaim highlighted the importance of strengthening bilateral relations. The two sides also discussed exploring opportunities for collaboration in various fields and specialties.

Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The county has for years been split between rival administrations.
