The Oil Crescent Security Directorate announced the death of four individuals, including a woman and her daughter, in a horrific traffic accident on Sunday evening on the Brega coastal highway in Libya.
According to the directorate’s statement on their Facebook page, a vehicle driven by citizen Abdalbasit Aljerwali collided with another, resulting in a fire that led to the fatalities. The accident claimed the lives of Abdalbasit’s wife, Sarah Buqadara, and their daughter, Aisha Abdalbasit.
The father sustained burns, while his three other children, Salem, Hoor, and Haneen, suffered severe injuries. The driver of the other vehicle, Adel Hassan, and his passenger, AlBakr Ali AlBakr, were also killed in the incident.
Last week, a Sudanese man and his daughter lost their lives in a tragic collision with a fuel transport truck. The incident, which took place in Brega, saw the truck driver walking away without injuries.
In a statement, the Oil Crescent Security Directorate announced that the Sudanese father, identified as Fathelrahman Mohamed Khairy, born in 1959, was driving an Opel car with his daughter, Malak Fathelrahman Mohamed, born in 1997.
They were traveling from east to west when the fatal accident happened on Monday. The security directorate noted that Fathelrahman was a resident of the Brega area.
The fuel truck, driven by Libyan Abdullah Ibrahim Al-Mabrouk Al-Majbri from Benghazi, was driving in the opposite direction. Remarkably, he sustained no injuries in the accident that took the lives of the car’s passengers.
The Directorate extended gratitude towards the Sirte Oil Company’s firefighting team for their rapid and efficient response in managing the tragic scene.
The roads of Brega have been scenes of several fatal accidents. Just last February, a crash resulted in the deaths of four people, including two Libyan drivers, two Egyptians, and six more injured. Another incident involved a vehicle colliding with stray camels, resulting in one fatality.
These incidents spotlight the pressing road safety issues in Libya, especially in regions like Brega. Factors contributing to these accidents include poor road conditions, inadequate traffic law enforcement, and the dangers of stray animals.
The Libyan government and local authorities face the urgent task of implementing comprehensive road safety measures. This includes infrastructure improvement, the enforcement of traffic regulations, and public education campaigns on road safety to mitigate the risks and prevent future tragedies.
