On Tuesday, the Director General of the Libyan Development and Reconstruction Fund, Belgassim Khalifa Haftar, signed contracts with top Turkish construction and infrastructure companies.
This collaboration is set to launch a series of strategic development projects in Benghazi, signaling a proactive approach to urban renewal and infrastructure enhancement in the city, marking a pivotal moment in Libya’s efforts to rebuild and modernize its urban landscapes.
The Reconstruction and Stability Committee, established by the Libyan House of Representatives, highlighted on its official Facebook page that these contracts with Turkish firms are aimed at spearheading several critical projects within Benghazi.
Key initiatives include the refurbishment and completion of the University of Benghazi’s Central Library, the enhancement and modernization of sewage treatment facilities, and the revitalization of the 23rd July Lake. The ultimate objective of these projects is to contribute to the sustainable development of Benghazi, ensuring cleaner beaches and a pollution-free environment for its inhabitants.
Before the initiation of physical work, each project is slated to undergo a rigorous phase of study and design. This preparatory work is crucial to ensure that the planned developments are not only sustainable but also tailored to meet the long-term needs and aspirations of the Benghazi community.
These recent agreements with Turkish and, previously, Emirati companies underscore Balgassim Haftar’s commitment to engaging with international partners in Libya’s reconstruction efforts.
The focus has been particularly strong on regions that have suffered from natural calamities, including the catastrophic floods that ravaged Derna and the Al Jabal Al Akhdar region, as well as Benghazi and Ajdabiya, demonstrating a targeted approach to address areas in dire need of rehabilitation.
This collaboration between Libya and Turkey signifies a proactive step forward in the restoration and enhancement of Libyan infrastructure and public amenities. By investing in substantial urban development projects, Libya aims not only to rebuild what has been lost or damaged but also to lay the groundwork for a more sustainable and prosperous future for cities like Benghazi.
