Former Lebanese Member of Parliament and the individual responsible for the abduction of Hannibal Gaddafi, Hassan Yaacoub, asserted that Lebanon’s only leverage in a significant international case is the detention of Hannibal Gaddafi.
Yaacoub elaborated that Hannibal Gaddafi remains imprisoned in Lebanon to extract information and secure cooperation regarding the case of Imam Musa al-Sadr. Despite the anticipation of a collaborative delegation from the Libyan Ministry of Justice, such cooperation has not materialized.
The former MP highlighted the cessation of any negotiations due to what he described as a halt in the paths to bargaining and the protraction previously encountered. He pointed out that all efforts related to the release of Hannibal Gaddafi are indefinitely paused, contingent upon developments in this case.
This statement shines a light on the complex dynamics between Lebanon and Libya, revolving around the longstanding mystery of Imam Musa al-Sadr’s disappearance in 1978. The involvement of Hannibal Gaddafi, son of the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, adds a layer of political intricacy to the case, suggesting that the resolution and cooperation between the two nations remain fraught with challenges.
As Lebanon holds onto Hannibal Gaddafi, the unfolding developments underscore the intricate interplay of international relations, justice, and the long shadow cast by historical events. The case continues to draw attention to the importance of diplomatic engagement and the quest for closure in one of the Middle East’s most enduring mysteries.
Last January, Lebanon’s Prosecutor-General, Ghassan Oueidat stated that Hannibal Gaddafi is well and in good health.
Oueidat clarified that “there is no truth to the circulating news in the media and social media claiming the death of Gaddafi’s son, in Lebanese prisons.”
Oueidat added that “these reports are not true and are mere rumours,” emphasizing that Hannibal had a dental appointment two days ago, and is in good health.
Previously, Reem Youssef Aldabri, Hannibal’s lawyer, denied the circulating news of his death, due to a heart attack.
