On Tuesday, the High National Elections Commission in Libya (HNEC) reiterated its commitment to preparing for the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.
In a statement, the Commission said it is waiting for the formation of a new government to supervise and overlook the upcoming elections.
HNEC expressed its commitment to enacting election laws referred to it by the parliament. It t said it has issued decision to endorse the voter registration list for the National Assembly and presidential elections as a progressive step within its preparations for the general elections.
The Commission urged all citizens to voluntarily register in the voter registry and seize the opportunity to participate in determining the nation’s leadership.
HNEC attributed the delay in municipal council elections to various technical and administrative challenges. It highlighted the partial rebuilding of the voter registration system to include municipal and general elections.
The Commission also pointed out Decision No. 54 of 2024, which integrates municipal councils with expiring terms this year into the electoral process, increasing the targeted number of municipal councils to 106, with their designations preceding the execution process.
Regarding union and professional association elections, the Commission called upon authorized entities to engage with its dedicated committee promptly. “Failure to respond within four months from the approval of governing systems may lead the Commission to refer the matter to the Parliament’s Committee for the Accreditation of Unions and Professional Associations for legitimacy review,” the statement said.
The Commission underscored its responsibility towards its entrusted mandate, urging state institutions and officials to collaborate seamlessly and facilitate its operations without constraint. It also expressed confidence in the successful execution of forthcoming electoral obligations, citing available resources and qualified personnel.
